Eating After Wisdom Tooth Extractions: A Guide to Follow

Having your wisdom teeth removed can play a big role in protecting your oral health. The procedure, though, does come with a short recovery period. You’ll need to make a few temporary changes to what you eat during this time. Doing so will keep you more comfortable and lower your risk of complications like painful dry socket. Here’s what you should have on your plate and what to steer clear of.

What Options Are Friendly After My Procedure?

Your mouth will be sore after you have your third molars extracted. You will have some swelling and bleeding, particularly during the first few days. It’s best to stick to soft, nutritious foods that won’t irritate the healing tissues.

A few options that you can stock up on are mashed potatoes, avocados, applesauce, yogurt, warm broths, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, and cottage cheese. Generally, anything that requires little to no chewing is a great option to have, so start brainstorming to ensure eating stays exciting.

What Foods Should I Avoid?

On the flip side, hard, crunchy, and tough foods are best avoided for now. They can worsen soreness or dislodge the protective blood clot in the healing socket. This component of your recovery is vital in keeping the area clean and protected, but using a straw can also move it around, so keep this tool out of your drinks.

In general, tough meats, hard candies, raw vegetables, and spicy and acidic foods are some to be wary of. Hot food and drinks can also be trouble, especially if your mouth is still numb.

When Can I Get Back to My Normal Diet?

Everyone heals at their own pace, but most patients feel ready to go back to their normal diet within about two weeks of their surgery. You might even be able to dig into your favorite foods within seven to ten days. That said, make sure you listen to your body. Be patient with the process, so if anything is causing discomfort, set it aside and try it again in a few days. You will be back to your normal meals in no time.
