What Is BOTOX?
BOTOX is a medicine made from botulinum toxin. When injected into the muscles in your face, it blocks the chemical signals that cause them to contract. Since many wrinkles only form as a result of such contractions, temporarily paralyzing the muscles in this way can go a long way toward reducing fine lines on the face. The effects typically become noticeable after 5 – 10 days and last around 3 – 4 months, at which time the treatment can be repeated.
Who Is a Good Candidate for BOTOX?
If you feel self-conscious due to fine lines and wrinkles on your face, you might want to start thinking about BOTOX. The treatment tends to be more effective on dynamic wrinkles — wrinkles that form as a result of muscle movement — so it is typically recommended for fine lines that have formed around or between the eyes, on the forehead, or around the neck. We will need to confirm that you are not allergic to any ingredients in BOTOX and that you do not have any potentially complicating conditions before you move forward with the injections.
The Benefits of BOTOX
Some of the most outstanding benefits of BOTOX include:
- It is minimally invasive.
- No downtime is required after the injections are administered.
- A BOTOX appointment usually takes less than one hour.
- The results can last for months at a time.
- BOTOX is much more affordable than invasive cosmetic surgeries.
- BOTOX has a track record of safety and effectiveness.
- When it is properly administered, BOTOX can look very natural — you will not have to worry about looking like you have “had some work done.”
BOTOX FAQs
Is BOTOX Safe?
BOTOX uses small doses of botulinum toxin to get results. In these amounts, it is considered perfectly safe. Some researchers believe that cosmetic applications for BOTOX may carry less risk than therapeutic injections because the doses are typically much smaller.
You’re more likely to experience adverse side-effects from BOTOX if your injections aren’t prepared according to FDA standards, or if you’re injected by an inexperienced injector.
In the first 14 years after BOTOX was initially approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, only 36 adverse events were reported. Furthermore, in many of those cases, these effects were related to the patient’s underlying medical condition, not to the BOTOX itself.
Is BOTOX Permanent?
Most BOTOX treatments last for around three months; however, for some people it can last up to six months. During that time, it will help you look youthful and vibrant. Once it wears off, you are free to repeat treatment as many times as you’d like.
BOTOX is considered temporary because it is a protein your body breaks down over time. How long your injection is effective depends on a variety of factors, including your age, metabolism, activity level, and exposure to environmental toxins.
Because BOTOX is temporary, your injections are safer and more efficient as an antiaging treatment plan, because it gives you and your dentist the opportunity to monitor health developments and new aesthetic goals.
What Happens If I Stop BOTOX Injections?
Should you decide to discontinue BOTOX after many years of regular injections, the only effect you will experience is that your wrinkles will return, albeit slower than if you hadn’t been using BOTOX in the first place. Thus, even after you stop, you should still look younger than you would if you’d never been injected to begin with.
Your wrinkles will slowly return because your facial muscles will begin to work normally. The length of time you can retain your younger looking appearance after stopping injections will depend on how long you’ve been getting treatment, as well as what your status was when you began. Although your wrinkles and fine lines will eventually return, they won’t be worse than if you hadn’t used BOTOX at all.
Should you decide to take a break from BOTOX injections, you can do so safely and even return later for more without any adverse side effects.
Why Should I Go to My Dentist for BOTOX?
While it may not seem like an obvious choice, when you think about it, getting BOTOX from your dentist makes perfect sense. Dentists specialize in the oral and maxillofacial areas at higher levels than any other type of practitioner and thus are optimal candidates to administer BOTOX. Not only do they go through extensive training for the head, neck, and facial regions, but they also have daily experience injecting cranial nerves in sensitive areas of the head.
Furthermore, dentists are much more familiar with the overall complications that can arise in the facial area than other healthcare professionals. This gives them a more comprehensive understanding of how to remedy any problems that might emerge during treatment.
Unlike other healthcare professionals who administer BOTOX, dentists also utilize proper lip-to-teeth ratio, how a smile reacts, and how the teeth relate to the soft tissue surrounding the injection sites. When you choose a dentist to administer BOTOX, you should feel confident in your choice thanks to their encyclopedic knowledge of your facial muscles!
